The Campus Sandbox is designed for university faculty teaching AI, data, or Indigenous studies; UX and IT teams responsible for digital platforms; researchers working with Indigenous communities; and post-secondary students who want to build responsible, sovereign tech skills.

Modules are open-access and self-paced, so they slot into a single lecture, a full semester lab, or a department-wide professional development stream — whatever your institution needs.

Course modules

Module 1

First Nations Data Sovereignty & OCAP® in Machine Learning

Applying OCAP® principles to data collection, algorithmic training, cloud storage, and database design. Students learn to audit a real ML pipeline for Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession — and to redesign it so Indigenous data stays in Indigenous hands at every stage.

Module 2

Operationalizing TRC Call to Action 92 in Software & Digital Systems

Moving corporate and institutional tech teams from performative statements to audited, structural reconciliation in project delivery. Learners examine procurement, vendor selection, and team composition through a reconciliation lens and produce a concrete action plan.

Module 3

Ethical AI, Bias Mitigation & Cultural Safety in User Experience (UX)

Identifying algorithmic bias, embedding cultural safety into digital experience platforms (DXP), and designing accessible, inclusive student portals. Hands-on exercises surface bias in real model outputs and walk through mitigation strategies that respect community context.

Module 4

UNDRIP Article 31 & Sovereign Cloud Architecture

Navigating Canadian data residency (FIPPA/PHIA), cross-border data risks, and sovereign cloud infrastructure for public sector tech. Students compare cloud architectures and map where data, logs, and model artifacts actually live — and what that means for Indigenous data rights.
